The Goose (Golden Hen) That Laid the Golden Eggs – A Greed That Changed Everything

The Goose (Golden Hen) That Laid the Golden Eggs – A Greed That Changed Everything

This story is also popularly known as The Golden Hen in many versions.

Once upon a time, a poor farmer and his wife lived in a small village. They worked hard every day, yet barely earned enough to survive.

One morning, the farmer made a surprising discovery.

In the nest of one of his geese lay a shining golden egg.

At first, he thought it was a trick. But when he took it to the market, the goldsmith confirmed — it was pure gold.

The couple couldn’t believe their luck.

The next morning, the goose laid another golden egg.

And the next.

And the next.

Soon, the farmer and his wife became wealthy. They no longer struggled for food or money.

But something changed.

Gratitude slowly turned into greed.

One evening, the farmer said,

“If this goose lays one golden egg every day, imagine how many must be inside her!”

His wife agreed.

“Why wait for one egg daily? Let’s get all the gold at once.”

Blinded by impatience, the farmer took a knife.

He killed the goose and cut her open.

But inside… there was nothing.

No pile of gold.

No treasure.

Just an ordinary goose.

In one foolish moment, they destroyed their miracle.

From that day on, no more golden eggs came.

The farmer and his wife returned to poverty — this time with regret heavier than gold.

And they finally understood something too late.
