One day,
the royal court of Akbar was filled with silence.
The emperor looked troubled.
“My ring is missing,” Akbar announced.
“It was on my finger this morning.”
The ring was precious.
Not because of gold—
but because it was a royal symbol.
Guards searched the palace.
Courtiers searched the halls.
Servants searched every corner.
Nothing.
Akbar frowned.
“The ring was lost inside this court,”
he said firmly.
“So the one who took it
is also inside this court.”
The ministers grew uneasy.
Some looked at the floor.
Some glanced at each other.
Akbar turned to Birbal.
“Birbal,” he said,
“can you find it?”
Birbal smiled calmly.
“Yes, Your Majesty,” he replied.
“But I will need no guards,
no searching,
and no punishment.”
The court murmured in surprise.
Birbal stepped forward and said loudly,
“The ring is with one of you.
And by sunset,
it will return to the emperor—
by itself.”
The ministers were shocked.
Birbal continued,
“I have placed a magical spell on the ring.
By evening,
the finger of the thief will turn red.”
Fear spread across the court.
Everyone looked at their hands.
Some laughed nervously.
Some hid their fingers in their sleeves.
Birbal watched silently.
After some time,
he noticed one minister
constantly rubbing his finger
and trying to hide his hand.
Birbal stepped closer.
“Why are you hiding your hand?”
he asked gently.
The minister panicked.
He fell at Akbar’s feet
and took out the ring.
“I was afraid,” he confessed.
“I thought no one would notice.”
Akbar looked disappointed.
Birbal bowed and said,
“There was no magic, Your Majesty.
Only fear of being caught.”
Akbar nodded.
“Birbal,” he said,
“you did not find the ring—
you found the truth.”
The ring was returned.
And the court learned a lesson
they would never forget.
