Tenali Raman and the Horse Trader – A Lesson in Smart Thinking

One day, a famous horse trader arrived in the kingdom of Vijayanagara. He brought with him a magnificent white horse and claimed it was the fastest and strongest in the land.

The trader announced proudly,
“This horse can run like the wind! No other horse in the kingdom can defeat it.”

King Krishnadevaraya was impressed. He loved fine horses and considered buying it.

But Tenali Raman, the court’s clever advisor, watched quietly.

The trader demanded a very high price.
“It is rare and unbeatable,” he insisted.

The king turned to Tenali and asked,
“What do you think?”

Tenali smiled gently.
“Your Majesty, before buying such a valuable horse, shouldn’t we test its strength?”

The trader agreed confidently.

The next morning, a race was arranged. But instead of racing against another horse, Tenali suggested something unusual.

“Let the horse carry a load of sandbags equal to the weight of a warrior,” Tenali said. “If it is truly the strongest, it will not struggle.”

The trader hesitated but could not refuse in front of the king.

As the sandbags were placed on the horse, it began to tremble. When the race started, the horse stumbled and could barely move.

The crowd murmured in surprise.

Tenali calmly said,
“A truly strong horse must prove its strength, not just its speed.”

The trader grew nervous. His claims were clearly exaggerated.

Tenali then asked another question.
“If the horse is so rare, why are you so eager to sell it quickly?”

The trader had no answer.

Finally, under pressure, he confessed that the horse was ordinary and that he had exaggerated its qualities to earn more gold.

The king was disappointed but grateful.

He turned to Tenali and said,
“Once again, you have saved the kingdom from being fooled.”

Tenali replied with a humble smile,
“Your Majesty, wise decisions require proof, not promises.”

The horse trader left the kingdom embarrassed, having learned that clever words cannot defeat clever thinking.

And so, Tenali Raman and the Horse Trader became another story of how intelligence is stronger than deception.
