Early one morning,
on a quiet beach in Mexico,
a fisherman returned from the sea.
His boat carried only a few fish.

An investment banker,
visiting on vacation,
watched with curiosity.
“Why are you back so early?”
the banker asked.
The fisherman smiled.
“I have caught enough fish for today.”
The banker looked surprised.
“But the sea is full of fish,” he said.
“You could stay longer
and catch much more.”
The fisherman shook his head.
“Why would I?” he asked.
The banker laughed gently.
“Because you could earn more money.”
The fisherman waited.
The banker continued excitedly,
“With more money,
you could buy a bigger boat.
Then you could catch more fish,
hire people,
buy more boats,
and build a company.”
The fisherman listened quietly.
“And then?” he asked.
The banker’s eyes sparkled.
“Then you could open offices,
sell your company,
become very rich!”
The fisherman paused.
“And then?” he asked again.
The banker smiled confidently.
“Then you could retire.
Move to a small village near the sea.
Sleep late.
Fish a little.
Spend time with family.
Relax with friends.
Enjoy life.”
The fisherman looked at the banker.
And smiled.
“That is exactly
what I am doing right now.”
The banker fell silent.
The waves continued to touch the shore.
The sun rose higher.
The fisherman picked up his basket of fish
and walked home.
Not richer.
But content.
